Java JRE is a small download but makes a large difference with your pc. With Java JRE you will not be able to run most web applications that modern browsers. Java JRE is also needed if you plan to program in the Java environment. Java of course, is a slow platform by nature, but it is a must have application and more the likely, you have already unwittingly installed it.
