Notepad++ is not dissimilar to the standard notepad that comes bundled with Windows, only with a plethora of additional features and functionality. The most significant difference between the two is that Notepad++ is actually a source code editor, with support for Java, C++, HTML, PHP and many more. Characters are now shown in different colors for their proper uses, making them far easier to work with, and the multi-page view option is a sheer stroke of genius. Notepad++ also allows you to directly import code onto Windows Explorer or Firefox via a shortcut, which, as all web developers will know, is a very useful function indeed. Rounding it all off is a simple, straightforward interface and streamlined control scheme, making Notepad++ one of the top source code editors available at present.

Notepad++ is a source code editor for the programmer and a better text editor for the general user running under the M$ Windows environment. This project, written in C++ with pure win32 api (i.e. without MFC, that ensure the higher execution speed and smaller size of the program), is under the GNU Licence.
The first part of Notepad++ is the Scintilla edit component (a very powerful editor component). The second part is the windows controls which are implemented to enhance the GUI.
